Dynamic Vapor Sorption (DVS)
Invented in 1991 by Prof. Daryl Williams, Founder, and MD of Surface Measurement Systems, Dynamic Vapor Sorption is an advanced technique for the physico-chemical characterization of solid materials. 20x the speed, 20x the accuracy, and requiring a 20th of sample size compared to alternative techniques, Dynamic Vapor Sorption is a powerful tool for determining advanced sorption properties.
What is Dynamic Vapor Sorption?
Dynamic Vapor Sorption (DVS) is a gravimetric technique that exposes solid materials to controlled levels of humidity/gas concentration. Measuring changes in sample mass with the powerful SMS Ultrabalance, DVS is used to determine key adsorption and desorption properties for a range of solid materials, from sorption isotherms and kinetics to polymorphism and compound stability.
- Global Application
A favored tool in materials testing labs across the world, our advanced DVS moisture sorption analyzers are employed in a diverse range of industry sectors and applications. Spanning pharmaceuticals, food, fine chemicals, carbon capture, polymer development, and more, DVS provides vital insight for optimizing materials for drug formulation, product development, quality control, scale-up, production, packaging, and beyond.
How does DVS work?
Dynamic Vapor Sorption rapidly measures uptake and loss of moisture or organic vapors by flowing a carrier gas at a specified relative humidity (or partial pressure) over a sample suspended from an Ultrabalance sensitive microbalance, patented by Surface Measurement Systems, that measures the change in mass over a period of time.
-
Unrivaled SensitivityCapable of measuring changes in sample mass lower than 1 part in 10 million. Sample sizes typically 1 mg to 4 g.
-
Rapid EquilibriumAccurate determination on very small sample sizes (typically 10 mg) minimizes the equilibration time required.
-
Software ControlFully automated through purpose-built DVS control software. The DVS Data Analysis Suite provides a powerful environment for rapid plotting and quantitative analysis.
High-Resolution Isotherms
The DVS system produces highly detailed isotherm plots, allowing for clear differentiation of sorption and desorption behaviors across multiple solvents in real-time.
